The Wife of Nuh and the Wife of Lut

Is it enough to be in a righteous household to be righteous yourself? There is a verse in the Quran that answers this as clearly as it can be answered, and in it Allah gives the example of two women who lived in the two finest homes on earth in their time.

At the end of Surah At-Tahrim, Allah gives three examples in a row: two of people whose household did not help them, then two of women whom their surroundings did not harm. First: {Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants, but they both betrayed them.} Two prophets, two households, and complete closeness to what is good.

Notice the word {but they both betrayed them}, because something other than its meaning may come to mind. The scholars said the betrayal here is betrayal in religion: they did not believe, and they stood with the people against the two prophets, passing things to them and taking their side. The wives of prophets are protected from anything beyond that. So Nuh's wife lived with a man who called his people for nine hundred and fifty years and heard him every day; and Lut's wife lived in the house of the only man in the town who told people: this is not right.

The moment it turns on

Then the outcome comes in half a verse: {So they did not avail them from Allah at all, and it was said, enter the Fire with those who enter.} Two prophets availed them nothing. That is the clearest thing in this whole chapter: closeness to someone righteous does not make you righteous. They heard the truest words on earth, and then chose otherwise. Nearness to good gives you the chance; it does not give you the outcome. The outcome is made by your own choosing.

How it ended

When Allah commanded Nuh to take his family aboard the ship, the exception came: {except those against whom the word has already been decreed.} When Lut was told to leave with his family by night, he was told: {except your wife.} Then Allah closed the three examples with the wife of Pharaoh and Maryam, daughter of Imran: one in the worst house on earth who was saved, and one raised in the sanctuary who believed. The house does not decide; the person in it decides.

The lesson

No one else's deeds will help you on the Day of Judgement; only your own will.

  • Do not lean on your household or your lineage; every soul is held for what it earned.
  • Nearness to good is an opportunity; the choice remains yours.
  • Whoever lived beside the truth and did not take it has seen it without benefiting from it.

Think for a moment

Nuh's wife heard her husband's call for centuries and did not answer. Is there advice you hear at home every day and do not act on? What stops you?

Try it today

Pick one piece of advice you hear from your mother or father every day, and act on it fully once today — before they ask you to.

Where this story comes from

The Quran, Surah At-Tahrim: 10

They are set as an example of those who disbelieved, and that closeness does not help where there is betrayal — the verse's own words.
