The Wife of al-Aziz

What happens if you do something wrong and let someone else be punished in your place? In today's story, an innocent young man spent years in prison because of what one woman said. And then came a day when she stood in front of everyone and told the truth.

Yusuf was sold in Egypt, and bought by al-Aziz, one of the leading men, who said to his wife: {Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son.} So Yusuf grew up in their house. The Quran does not give this woman's name; it calls her "the wife of al-Aziz," and nothing said about naming her is established.

She sought to tempt him, closed the doors, and called him to what would not please Allah. He said one sentence: {I seek the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence.} I seek Allah's protection — and this man treated me well, so how could I betray him? And he ran for the door. She accused him in front of her husband, and a witness from her own family testified from his shirt that he was truthful and that she was the one who had sought him. And even so: {Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that he should be imprisoned for a time.} They imprisoned him after seeing the proof of his innocence with their own eyes.

The moment it turns on

Years passed with him in prison. Then the king wanted him released, and Yusuf refused to come out until his innocence was known: {Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands.} The women were gathered and questioned, and said: {Perfect is Allah! We know about him no evil.} And here she spoke, in front of them all: {Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.} Now the truth has come out; I am the one who was wrong, and he is truthful.

How it ended

Then she added a sentence showing she had understood what had happened to her: {And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.} I do not clear myself; the soul pushes its owner towards wrong, except whoever Allah has mercy on. And Yusuf came out of prison with a clean name, so that no one afterwards could say he was released without the matter being settled. The confession came years late — but it came, and that is better than never.

The lesson

Tell the truth even when it is against you, and even if it comes late.

  • If you are invited to something that would displease Allah, say "I seek Allah's refuge," and walk away without arguing.
  • Never let an innocent person be punished for something you did.
  • A late confession is better than one that never comes.

Think for a moment

Yusuf refused to leave prison until his innocence was clear, though he could have walked out that day. Why do you think he chose to wait?

Try it today

If someone is being blamed today for something you did, tell the truth before the day ends.
