Hawwa (Eve), the First Woman

If you and your brother both got something wrong, who apologises first? In today's story, the first man and the first woman in existence made a mistake together. And look at how their apology comes in the Quran — it is the most important thing in the story.

Allah created Adam, then created from him his wife so that each might find rest in the other: {And created from it its mate}, {that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.} He settled them in the Garden and said to them: {And eat from it in ease and abundance from wherever you will, but do not approach this tree.} The Quran does not give Hawwa's name; it says "his wife." The name we know her by today comes from outside the Quran.

Satan came to them: {But Satan whispered to them} — to them both, not to one without the other. Then he swore to them: {And he swore to them, Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisers.} {So he made them fall through deception.} {And they both ate of it.} Notice the form of every verse: to them, swore to them, made them fall, and they both ate. The Quran did not lay the blame on one of them rather than the other; it named them together in every single word.

The moment it turns on

Then came the moment this story is told for. Adam did not say "she gave it to me." She did not say "he led me to it." They said one sentence in one voice: {Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.} They were wrong together, and they came back together. That was the first home in existence, and the first lesson to come out of it: a home whose people return to Allah together is never lost.

How it ended

So Allah accepted their repentance and sent them down to the earth, and said: {And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer.} And from those two came all of humanity: {O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women.} Everyone you pass in the street today descends from that home that knew how to come back.

The lesson

If you were wrong together, come back together — and neither of you go looking for someone to blame.

  • Do not put your mistake on someone else, even if they had a part in it.
  • Whispering starts with beautiful words; watch out for whoever makes a wrong thing look good.
  • A home whose people return to Allah is never lost.

Think for a moment

The Quran named them together at every step: whispered to them, they both ate, they both returned, they both prayed. Why do you think that is? And what does it teach you about blame between brothers and sisters at home?

Try it today

If you and your brother or your friend get something wrong today, apologise first yourself, and do not wait for them to start.

Where this story comes from

The Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah: 35-37 and Al-A'raf: 19-23

The account is in the verses, where she is called his wife; the name Hawwa is not in the Quran but in the sunnah and the commentaries.
