The Zamzam water that people drink today from all over the world came up in a place where there was nothing: no tree, no well, no person. And it only came after a woman ran seven times between two hills, looking for anyone at all. What was her story?
Allah commanded Ibrahim to leave Hajar and her nursing son Ismail in a valley in Mecca with nothing growing, no water and no people. {Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House.} He left with them a bag of dates and a skin of water, and then turned and walked away without looking back.
Hajar followed him saying: Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person and nothing at all? She said it again and again and he did not turn around. Then she asked one question that changed everything: did Allah command you to do this? He said: yes. She said: then He will not abandon us. And she went back content. This account is in Sahih al-Bukhari, from Ibn Abbas.
The water ran out, and the baby grew so thirsty he writhed in front of her. She did not sit and wait. She climbed Safa to see if anyone was there, and saw no one, then went down into the valley and hurried across to Marwah, and came back. Seven times. And she knew perfectly well that running between two hills does not bring water out of the ground — but she could not sit still while her son was thirsty. Then she heard a voice and said: you have made me hear you, if you have any help. And there was the angel at the place of Zamzam, digging with his heel until the water appeared.
She began to bank the water in with her hands so it would not run off, saying: gather, gather. The Prophet said: "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail; had she left Zamzam alone, it would have been a flowing spring." Then people came and settled near her for the water, and the empty valley became a city, and the Sacred House was built. And today people circle it and walk seven times between Safa and Marwah — walking where she walked, and drinking what she drank.
Strive with what you can do, and rely on the One who holds what you cannot.
Hajar knew that running between the hills would not bring water. So why did she run? What does that teach you when you are stuck with nothing you can do?
If you have a problem today you think you cannot solve, take one small step in it, and then say: Allah is enough for me.
Sahih al-Bukhari (3364); the settling of the family in the Quran, Surah Ibrahim: 37
Ibrahim's supplication at the House is in the verse. The fuller account — the running and Zamzam — is in Sahih al-Bukhari, and the Quran does not give her name.
