Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba

The hardest thing for a person to say is: I was wrong. Harder still is saying it as a ruler, in front of all your people, after years of doing that very thing. In today's story, a queen did exactly that.

Saba was a wealthy kingdom ruled by a woman. The hoopoe said of her when it returned to Sulaiman: {Indeed, I found a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.} But it mentioned the problem in the same report: {I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah.} So Sulaiman sent her a letter calling her not to be haughty with him and to come to him in submission.

She gathered her people and said: {O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter.} Then: {Advise me in my affair. I would not decide a matter until you witness for me.} A queen taking counsel. They said: {We are men of strength and of great military might.} We are strong; we can fight. She did not take their advice, and said something wise: {Indeed, kings, when they enter a city, ruin it.} Then she tested him: {But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what the messengers return} — is he a king who wants wealth, or someone calling to something else?

The moment it turns on

Sulaiman refused the gift and would not accept it, so she knew he was not after wealth. She came herself. When she arrived she found her own throne already there ahead of her; then she entered the palace and took the floor for water and uncovered her shins, and was told: {It is a palace whose floor is made smooth with glass.} Glass, not water. And here is the moment: a clear-minded woman understood in a single instant that her own eyes can deceive her, and that what she sees is not always what it is. So she said: {My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulaiman to Allah, Lord of the worlds.}

How it ended

Look exactly at what she said — there are two lessons in her words. She said "I have wronged myself" — not "my people wronged me," and not "this is how I found my forefathers." And she said "I submit with Sulaiman to Allah" — with Sulaiman, not to Sulaiman; submitting to Allah alone, with Sulaiman beside her and not above her. A queen who left what she had been on in front of all her people, and saw in it no defeat and nothing to be ashamed of.

The lesson

The bravest people are those who let go of their own opinion once the truth is clear.

  • Take counsel before you decide; "I would not decide a matter until you witness for me."
  • Do not rush into a fight; she chose to make sure before making war.
  • Say "I was wrong" without hunting for whoever passed the mistake on to you.

Think for a moment

The queen said "I have wronged myself," and she could have said "this is how I found my people and my forefathers." Why do you think she chose to carry it herself?

Try it today

If it becomes clear today that you were wrong about something, even something small, say it out loud: I was wrong.

Where this story comes from

The Quran, Surah An-Naml: 22-44

Her story, her counsel and her submission are in the verses, where she is a woman ruling over them; the name Bilqis comes from the historians and commentators, not the Quran.
