If you had everything you could want — a palace, servants, gold, and you were married to the most powerful man on earth — what would you ask Allah for? In today's story there was a woman in exactly that position. And she asked Allah for a house.
Asiya was the wife of Pharaoh, the man who told people: {I am your most exalted lord.} She lived in his palace and saw with her own eyes what he did to people and what was done to their sons. The Quran does not give her name; it names her by her position: {the wife of Pharaoh} — known by the house she was in, the worst house on earth. And then she herself became an example Allah set for all the believers.
When they found the basket in the river with a baby inside, and Pharaoh wanted him killed, it was she who said: {A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son.} Musa survived because of one sentence from her. Then Musa grew up and became a prophet calling Pharaoh to Allah, and she believed in him — inside the house of the man denying him. That is the hardest picture you can imagine: your faith held in a house where it is not welcome.
Then came the day her faith was known. And what did she say? {My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people.} Notice the order of the request: she said "near You" before she said "a house." The neighbour before the home. A woman in a palace beyond description, asking for a house — but with Allah, not on this earth.
So Allah made her an example for all believers, men and women alike: {And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh.} The man who said "I am your most exalted lord" was finished and drowned; and the prayer of a woman inside his own house is still recited in the Quran today. No one knows where the palace she lived in stood; and the house she asked for, Allah promised her.
What matters is not where you live, but what you choose while you are there.
Asiya had everything this world offers, and asked for a house in Paradise. If you had one prayer that would certainly be answered, what would you ask for? And why that?
Pray Asiya's prayer today: "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise" — and think about "near You" as you say it.
The Quran, Surah At-Tahrim: 11 and Al-Qasas: 9
Her supplication and her being set as an example for the believers are in the verse; the Quran does not name her, and the name Asiyah comes from the sunnah and the commentaries.
