Can cheating on a scale be a matter of religion? In today's story, Allah sent a prophet to a people whose first problem was not their prayer… it was their weights and measures. And he tied the two together in a single sentence.
Madyan was a town on the trade road; its people were merchants and their wealth came from buying and selling. They worshipped other than Allah, and did something else besides: they shorted the measure and the scale — taking in full and giving back less — and sat on the roads frightening travellers. So Allah sent them Shuaib, peace be upon him, so eloquent and clear in speech that he was called the orator of the prophets.
He said to them: {O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale.} He joined the two in one breath: worship of Allah, and honesty on the scale. Then: {And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.} Then a beautiful line: {What remains from Allah is best for you, if you are believers} — the little left to you from what is lawful is better than the much you take without right.
And what did they answer? They said something worth stopping at for a long while: {O Shuaib, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please?} Does your prayer tell you to interfere with our money? As if to say: you go and pray, and leave our trade to us. And the answer is inside their own question: yes. Prayer instructs the one who prays how to weigh, how to sell, how to take. Religion is not one thing in the mosque and another in the marketplace.
Then they threatened him: {And if not for your family, we would have stoned you, and you are not to us one respected.} He said: {Is my family more respected for power by you than Allah?} They persisted in what they were doing, and what came, came: {So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home corpses fallen prone.} Allah saved Shuaib and those who believed with him. And those who feared their wealth would shrink if they measured fairly — all of their wealth was gone.
Your honesty in buying and selling is part of your religion, not something outside it.
They told Shuaib: our money is ours, we do what we like with it. Are there things you think of as "your business alone" that religion may have something to say about?
If you have something today that you borrowed or took that is not yours, give it back whole, exactly as you took it.
