Prophet Nuh and the Great Ark

How many times do you repeat something before you give up? Twice? Ten times? In today's story a man said the same thing for nine hundred and fifty years. And every time, they put their fingers in their ears so they would not hear him.

Some time after Adam, people began worshipping other than Allah, so Allah sent Nuh, peace be upon him — the first messenger sent to the people of the earth. {And We certainly sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years.} Nine hundred and fifty years, with no army, no authority and no wealth — only words, and patience with them.

Nuh himself told us how he called them, in a surah that carries his name: {My Lord, indeed I invited my people night and day}, {Then I invited them publicly. Then I announced to them and confided to them secretly.} Night and day, openly and quietly — he tried every way he knew. And what did they do? {They put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with great arrogance.} Then Allah commanded him to build the ark, and he built it while they passed by him every day and mocked him.

The moment it turns on

Then the flood came. In the middle of the waves, Nuh called out to his son: {O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers.} The son said: {I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.} Nuh said: {There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy.} {And the waves came between them.} The hardest moment in the whole story is not the flood or the drowning; it is a father calling his son, and the son not answering.

How it ended

Then Allah said: {And it was said, O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold. And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished.} Nuh and those with him came down to the earth again and settled it. Nine hundred and fifty years of calling produced only a few — {and none had believed with him, except a few} — and from those few came all of humanity afterwards. Anyone measuring Nuh's success by the count was measuring wrong.

The lesson

Your work is to do your part; the result was never your part.

  • Do not measure your success by how many people responded to you.
  • Carry on with good even when people mock you; Nuh built the ship while they laughed.
  • Being related to someone righteous does not save you if you do nothing; Nuh's son was not saved by his lineage.

Think for a moment

Nuh called people for centuries and only a few answered, and he never stopped. What is something you tried again and again without it working? What made you keep going, or stop?

Try it today

Try once more today at something you gave up on because it did not work the first time.
