Prophet Lut and the Ruined City

What do you do when you are the only one in your town who can see that what people are doing is wrong? No one with you, no one listening, and you know you are right. In today's story, a prophet lived that for years, until he said a sentence anyone who has felt alone will understand.

Lut, peace be upon him, was sent to towns whose people had committed an immorality no one before them in the worlds had committed, and who also cut off the road and did what was wrong openly in their gatherings. And Lut had no one among them supporting him; no clan to protect him and no group behind him. {And to Lut We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds.}

Lut said to them: {Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with among the worlds?} He reminded them and advised them, and it went on a long time. He said: {Is there not among you a man of reason?} And what was their answer? {And the answer of his people was only that they said, expel them from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure.} Look at the charge: expel them because they keep themselves clean. Their purity had become the fault they were driven out for.

The moment it turns on

Then the angels came to Lut as guests he did not recognise, and his people came rushing to him wanting his guests, and he stood defending them alone. And here he said the line the story turns on: {If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support.} If only I had strength against you, or a strong back to lean on. A prophet said that. And the angels moved to reassure him: {O Lut, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you.} He thought he had no support, and his support was standing inside his house.

How it ended

He was told to leave with his family by night and that none of them should look back. He left — except his wife: {except his wife; she was of those who remained behind} — because her heart was with the people, not with him. Then Allah turned those towns upside down and rained on them stones of hard clay. The one who was alone and without strength walked out safe; and of the many, not one remained.

The lesson

When everyone agrees on something wrong, it does not become right — even if you are the only one who says so.

  • The truth is not known by how many people say it.
  • When things close in on you, know that your strong support is Allah.
  • Being close to someone righteous does not help if you go against them; Lut's wife lived in a prophet's house.

Think for a moment

Lut said "if only I had some power against you" — and he was a prophet. Has there been a time when you felt completely alone? Who did you turn to?

Try it today

If you see something today that you know is wrong and everyone is joining in, do not join in — walking away is enough.
