A sound coming out of a statue. That is all it was. It could not speak, it knew nothing, it helped no one — but people heard the sound and believed. How does that happen? And why do people sometimes believe what makes no sense?
Musa went to his Lord's appointment for thirty nights, which Allah completed with forty, and left his brother Harun among his people, saying: {Take my place among my people, do right, and do not follow the way of the corrupters.} The Children of Israel had only recently left Egypt and everything they had seen there of statues being worshipped. Forty nights, with their prophet away. That was all it took.
One of them — the Samiri — gathered the people's gold jewellery and made from it {a calf, a body, that had a lowing sound} — a body shaped like a calf that made a noise like cattle. And he said to them: {This is your god and the god of Musa.} Many of them followed him. Harun stood among them warning them: {O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order.} And what did they answer? {We will never cease being devoted to it until Musa returns to us.}
Musa returned angry and grieved, and asked one question that exposed the whole thing: {Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it possessed for them neither harm nor benefit?} Did they not see that it does not answer a single word, and cannot hurt them or help them? A simple question — and if each of them had asked it on the first day, not one would have followed. A deceiver only survives in the place where people have stopped asking.
Then Musa said of the calf: {We will surely burn it and then scatter it into the sea with a blast.} And so the "god" they had made with their own hands was finished, and it defended itself from nothing. As for the Samiri, Musa said to him: {So go. And indeed, it is for you in this life to say, no contact} — to live alone, no one coming near him and him coming near no one, saying to anyone who approached: no contact. He wanted to gather people around him, and ended with no one who would sit with him.
Before you follow something, ask one question: can it actually do anything for me?
One question was enough to expose it: can it answer me? What is the question you ask before you believe something new?
If someone invites you to something today, ask before you agree: what good is it? And is it right?
The Quran, Surah Ta-Ha: 85-97
The making of the calf and its end are the verses' own words.
