The People of the Ditch

Who is stronger: a king who holds the army, the prison and all the people, or a boy who holds nothing at all? In today's story the two met face to face. And it ended with the whole city believing the boy.

The Prophet told us of a king who had a sorcerer, and when the sorcerer grew old he asked the king for a boy to teach his craft to. The boy would go to him, and on the way he passed a monk — a man devoted to worship — and would sit with him and listen, and liked what he heard. So the boy had two roads he walked between every day: one where he was taught sorcery, and one where he was taught belief in Allah. And he did not yet know which of them was true.

One day a great beast blocked the road so that people could not pass. The boy took a stone and said: O Allah, if the way of the monk is more beloved to You than the way of the sorcerer, then kill this beast so the people can go on. He threw it, the beast died, and the people passed. That day the boy knew which of the two roads was true. Then Allah began to heal the sick and the blind at his hands, and people were amazed. Word reached the king, who seized the boy and tried everything to turn him from his faith and could not, and tried again and again to be rid of him — and each time the boy prayed, O Allah, deal with them however You wish, and each time he was saved.

The moment it turns on

The boy went back to the king himself and said something extraordinary: you will not be able to kill me until you do as I tell you. Gather the people in one place, then take an arrow from my quiver and say: in the name of Allah, the Lord of the boy. The king did as he said, and the boy died in front of all the people. But look at what happened in that same moment: all the people said, we believe in the Lord of the boy. The king meant to finish him in front of everyone — and the boy had made his own end into the proof.

How it ended

The king was enraged, and ordered ditches — long trenches dug in the ground — and fire was lit in them, and the people were given the choice between turning back from their faith and standing firm. They stood firm. There is a surah in the Quran that tells it: {Cursed were the companions of the trench} — cursed are those who dug it. Then Allah said of the oppressors: {Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell}, and of the believers: {They will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.} So who won in the end?

The lesson

Whoever loses this world and does not lose their faith has lost nothing.

  • A young person can recognise the truth and hold on to it.
  • Sit with those who teach you good; it was the monk who showed the boy his Lord.
  • What counts is with Allah, not what people see; and the great attainment is Paradise.

Think for a moment

The boy chose to make the last thing he did into a proof that people would believe. What is the thing you would want people to remember about you?
