Imagine being somewhere you cannot see anything at all. No window, no light, nobody. And you know that no one will find you, and no one will hear you however loudly you shout. What is left to you? In today's story, one of Allah's prophets found himself in exactly that place — at the bottom of the sea, inside a whale.
Yunus, peace be upon him, was a prophet Allah sent to the people of a large town, calling them to worship Allah alone. He called them, and kept calling, and they would not answer. Every time he spoke, they turned away. One day he could bear it no longer. He walked out from among them in anger, walked until he reached the sea, found a ship about to sail, and boarded it. And that is where our story begins.
The ship set out, then the wind rose and the waves turned rough, and the ship was in danger. So those aboard drew lots to choose one of them to go into the water. Allah says of Yunus: {And he drew lots and was among the losers.} So Yunus went down into the sea. It was night, the waves were over him, and there was no shore in sight. Then Allah commanded a great whale, and it swallowed him. The whale was not the end of the story, as you might think — it was the place where the real story began.
Now — what can Yunus actually do? He cannot swim out. He cannot shout and be heard. He does not even know where he is. One thing is still in his power: to call on his Lord. So he called out in the darkness — the dark of the whale, the dark of the sea, the dark of the night — and said: {There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.} Look at what he said. Not "get me out." Not "I do not deserve this." He began with Allah, then admitted his mistake. And Allah heard him from down there.
{So We responded to him and saved him from the distress.} The whale cast him onto bare ground with no tree and no shade, and his body was weak and ill, so Allah grew a gourd plant over him to shade him until he was strong again. Then the most beautiful part of the story happened: Yunus went back to the people he had left. And those who would not listen to him before… believed. {And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more. And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a time.}
Allah hears you wherever you are, and however tight the place becomes, the door back to Him is never shut.
Yunus had no idea how he would get out, and he prayed anyway. Think of a hard moment when you did not know what to do — what did you say then? And what would you have said in his place?
The first thing that annoys you today, stop for one moment before you speak or get angry, and say to yourself: "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

His being swallowed, his call from the darkness, his coming out and the gourd plant are all in the verses.
