Imagine leaving your place without permission, then coming back to find everyone asking where you were — and standing in front of you is someone with the power to punish you. What do you say in that moment? In today's story, a small bird stood in exactly that position before the greatest king on earth. And what it said is written in the Quran.
In Sulaiman's kingdom every creature had work it knew. The hoopoe is a bird with a crown of feathers on its head, and its task was to fly, explore, and find where the water was. One day Sulaiman was inspecting the birds, going along the ranks one by one… and the hoopoe was not there. Gone. And it had told no one before leaving.
Sulaiman said something severe: {I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him, unless he brings me clear authorisation.} In other words: either he has a clear reason, or there will be a penalty. It was not long before the hoopoe arrived. {But he stayed not long} — and said something astonishing: {I have encompassed that which you have not, and I have come to you from Saba with certain news.} A small bird telling the greatest king: I know something you do not. Then it told him what it had seen — a land called Saba, ruled by a woman with a magnificent throne and everything she could need… but her people bow to the sun instead of Allah.
Now look at what Sulaiman did. He did not say, "and who are you to speak?" He did not punish the bird for contradicting him. He said: {We will see whether you were truthful or were of the liars.} That is: we will check. He did not believe the news because he liked it, and he did not dismiss it because the one bringing it was small. He would verify first. That is the difference between someone who passes news on and someone who weighs it.
Sulaiman sent a letter with the hoopoe to the queen of Saba, calling her to worship Allah alone. She read it, consulted her people, and sent him a gift to test him, which he refused. Then she came herself, saw what she saw of Sulaiman's kingdom, and ended the story with one sentence: {My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulaiman to Allah, Lord of the worlds.} And all of it began with a bird that disappeared for a day to go and look.
News worth telling is a trust: whoever knows something should pass it on truthfully, and whoever hears it should check it before believing it.
Sulaiman could have punished the hoopoe straight away, and chose to listen and then check. Has there been a day when you got angry at someone before hearing them out? What did you find out once you listened?
If you hear something about someone today, do not pass it on until you ask: is this true? And who said it?
The Quran, Surah An-Naml: 20-44
The hoopoe's absence, its news of Saba and what followed are all in the verses.
