The largest animal that walks the earth, and the smallest bird that flies. In today's story they meet in one place, and the small one wins. So what had the whole army come to destroy? A house of stone, in a valley with no crops and no river… the Kaaba.
Before the Prophet was born, Mecca was a small valley with no river and nothing growing, but it held a house every Arab knew and came to from everywhere: the Kaaba, the first house set on earth for the worship of Allah alone. In Yemen there was a ruler named Abrahah. He watched people leave everything and head for Mecca, so he built a magnificent church to draw them to it instead — and nothing drew them. So he decided to destroy the Kaaba itself.
Abrahah assembled a large army, and with it an elephant so huge the people of Mecca had never seen its like. The army marched until it reached the edges of Mecca. The people of Mecca had no army to turn it back, and no strength to stand in its way. Abdul-Muttalib — the Prophet's grandfather — came to ask for his camels, which the army had taken. Abrahah was astonished: you ask me about your camels and say nothing of the house I have come to destroy? And he answered with words still remembered today: I am the owner of the camels, and the House has an Owner who will protect it. The Seerah literature records that when they turned the elephant towards the Kaaba it knelt on the ground and refused to move forward, and whenever they turned it any other way it rose and walked.
Then the answer came from where nobody was watching: not from an army, not from a weapon, not from a man. {And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay.} Small birds, flock following flock, carrying small stones and dropping them. And the whole army was finished. {And He made them like eaten straw} — like the leaves of a crop after the animals have eaten them and trampled what was left.
The Kaaba was not touched by a single stone. The event was so great that the Arabs began to date things by it: this happened in the Year of the Elephant. And in that very year the Prophet Muhammad was born. There is a whole surah in the Quran called Al-Fil that tells you this story in five verses — the one you recite in your prayer.
Allah protects His house and His religion, and He needs no force resembling the force of tyrants to do it.
Abdul-Muttalib said "the House has an Owner who will protect it," and he had no army and no weapon. Has something bigger than you ever happened that you could do nothing about? What did you do then?
Recite Surah Al-Fil in your prayer today, and as you recite it remember that Allah protects whoever cannot protect themselves.
The Quran, Surah Al-Fil; the details of the event in the Seerah literature
The event and its outcome are the surah's own words. Abrahah's name, the elephant kneeling and Abdul-Muttalib's reply come from the Seerah literature, not the Quran, which is why the story attributes them to it.
