The Loyal Dog of the Cave

The Quran names prophets, kings and nations. It also names… a dog. One dog, who did nothing great, said nothing, carried no message. All it did was follow its companions and refuse to leave them. So why did Allah mention it in His book?

In an old city ruled by a king who forced people to worship idols, a group of young men believed in Allah alone. They were few, and they knew their king would not leave them alone. So they met and made a very hard decision: to leave their homes, their families and their whole city, and go out with their faith. They did not know where they were going, or how long they would be gone, or whether they would return. And when they left, their dog followed them.

As they left, the young men prayed: {Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance in our affair.} They walked until they found a cave in a mountain and went inside. The dog did not go in with them; it settled at the entrance and stretched out its forelegs. And there Allah cast sleep over them. It was no ordinary sleep: {And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.}

The moment it turns on

Here is the sentence this story is told for. Allah did not say "and they slept, and their dog with them." He said: {And their dog stretching out his forelegs at the entrance.} He mentioned the dog — where it was, and how it lay with its forelegs out at the threshold. An animal that carries no duty and faces no reckoning, and yet it entered the Book of Allah, read by people until the last day, because it stayed with the righteous and did not leave them.

How it ended

Then Allah woke them after three hundred and nine years, and they thought they had stayed a day or part of a day. They sent one of them with their silver coins to buy food — and the coins were ancient, known to no one, and the city had changed entirely, and its people worshipped Allah. So the people learned of them, and knew that Allah's promise is true and the Hour is coming. Then Allah said of them: {So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument} — do not go on disputing their number; the number was never the lesson.

The lesson

Company lifts the one who keeps it — so look carefully at who you walk beside.

  • Choose your friends for their faith; the dog is in the Quran because of who it was with.
  • Loyalty is staying with people when the road gets hard, not when it is easy.
  • Do not spend yourself on details that do not help; Allah forbade arguing over their number.

Think for a moment

The dog followed its companions to a place it did not know, for a time it could not measure. Who are the friends you would follow into something difficult? And why those ones in particular?

Try it today

Think of one friend who brings you closer to what is good, and call them or sit with them today.

Where this story comes from

The Quran, Surah Al-Kahf: 18 and 22

The dog at the threshold is in the verse itself, and verse 22 warns against arguing over their number.
