The Yellow Cow of the Children of Israel

What happens if your father asks you for something simple, and you start asking: which one? what colour? where from? when? In today's story, a people did exactly that with a command that came from Allah. And at the start, the command was very easy.

In the time of Musa, peace be upon him, a crime took place among the Children of Israel: a man was found killed and no one knew who had killed him. People began accusing one another, and the trouble was about to grow until it poisoned the whole town. So they went to Musa and asked him to pray to Allah to show them the truth. That is the moment the command reached them.

The command came through Musa: {Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.} A cow. Any cow. It would have been enough to take the first cow they found, and the matter would have been over. But they began asking: which one? what colour? what work does it do? And with every question the matter narrowed on them. It became a cow neither old nor young, then {a yellow cow, bright in colour, pleasing to the observers}, then a cow never yoked to plough the earth or water the field, sound and without blemish. Until almost no cow on earth would do but one.

The moment it turns on

Then Allah said of them one very short sentence, and it is the most important line in the story: {So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.} They did it in the end — and they nearly did not. All that questioning and insisting had not given them more knowledge; it had given them exhaustion and hesitation. The command that first reached them was far wider than what they narrowed it to themselves.

How it ended

Then Allah commanded them to strike the dead man with part of the cow. They did, and Allah brought him to life for a moment; he named the one who had killed him, and returned as he was. The accusations ended and the truth was known. Then Allah closed the story: {Thus does Allah bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.} The story was never about a cow. It was about this: the One who brought that man back can bring all of you back.

The lesson

When a clear instruction reaches you, start doing it; asking on and on without need turns the easy thing hard.

  • Do what you understood of the instruction; do not go looking for a difficulty that is not in it.
  • Ask in order to understand, not in order to delay.
  • The One who brings a single dead man back can bring all people back.

Think for a moment

The Children of Israel asked many questions before doing what they were told. Has there been a day when you kept asking about something you already knew was right? What was stopping you from starting?

Try it today

Pick one thing your mother or father asked of you today, and do it straight away without a single question.

Where this story comes from

The Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah: 67-73

The command, their insistent questioning and the cow's description are all in the verses.
