If you asked Allah for a sign and then saw it with your own eyes, what would you do next? In today's story, a people asked for a sign and it came. It walked among them and drank from their water. Then they decided to end the matter with their own hands.
Thamud were a strong people. Allah gave them strength in their bodies and skill in their hands, until they were carving their houses out of mountains: {And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.} So Allah sent them Salih, peace be upon him — one of them, whose honesty they knew — calling them to worship Allah alone and leave the idols. And they asked him for a sign that he was truly a messenger.
The sign came: a she-camel. {This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you.} The commentators say she came out of a rock for them; that is not in the Quran. What was asked of them was not hard: leave her to eat in Allah's earth, and share the water with her — {For her is a drink, and for you is a drink, each on a known day.} One day hers, one day theirs. And Salih warned them: {And do not touch her with harm, lest the punishment of a great day seize you.} A few believed; most stayed as they were. And every day the camel walked among them, reminding them of what they did not want to remember.
A group of them agreed on something, and then the worst of them went out and hamstrung the camel. {So they hamstrung her, and became regretful.} Notice the last word: they regretted it. They really did. But the regret came after the act, and the act does not come back. How many things do we do in a moment of anger or defiance, and then spend a long time wishing we had not.
Allah gave them three days: {Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.} Three whole days to turn back, and they did not. Then the blast seized them and they lay lifeless in their homes, and Allah saved Salih and those who believed with him. Their carved houses stayed in the mountains for people after them to walk past — the strength they built with was no use to them on the day they needed it.
Kindness to animals is part of this religion, and injustice is never forgotten by Allah, however small it looks to the one doing it.
Thamud had three full days to turn back from what they had done. If you had three days to put right something you got wrong, what would you start with?
If you see an animal today — a cat, a bird, even an ant — do not harm it, and put out water for it if you can.
The Quran, Al-A'raf: 73-79, Ash-Shams: 11-15, Al-Qamar: 27-31
The she-camel as a sign, the sharing of the water, her hamstringing, the three days' respite and the people's end are all in the verses. Her coming out of a rock is a commentators' account, not in the Quran, which is why the story attributes it to them.
