What is the smallest creature you have ever heard speak? In today's story, an ant speaks. One ant — too small to be seen by anyone walking past, weighing almost nothing. And yet what she said is written in the Quran to this day, read by people thousands of years later. So what did she say?
Sulaiman, peace be upon him, was both a prophet and a king. Allah gave him a kingdom given to no one after him: an army of people, jinn and birds, a wind that ran at his command, and an understanding of what birds and animals say. One day he set out with that whole army, until they came near a valley where ants lived. Ants live in small houses under the soil, invisible to anyone walking over them. And the army was coming.
A small ant felt the ground shaking beneath her, looked up, and saw what was coming. Now think with me: what can an ant do against an army? She cannot stop it, or speak to it, or carry her home away. So she did the one thing she could: she called out to her people. She said: {O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Sulaiman and his soldiers while they perceive not.} Notice her last words — "while they perceive not." She did not accuse them. She did not say they were wicked and meant to harm. She said they cannot see us.
Here is the moment the whole story turns on. The great king, at the head of his army, heard the voice of an ant. He actually heard it. {So he smiled, amused at her speech.} He did not take offence that she had warned people against him. He did not say, "and who is she to talk about me?" He smiled. That smile is the mark of someone truly great: all the power is in his hands, and his heart is still wide enough for the smallest creature that fears him.
Then Sulaiman did something you might not expect: he prayed. {My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness of which You approve.} In other words: my Lord, help me to thank You. The blessing he saw in that moment was not the army or the kingdom or the wind. It was that he had understood the words of an ant.
The smallest of us can still help those around them with what they have, and the greatest of us is never too great to listen to the smallest.
The ant knew she could not stop an army, and she spoke anyway. Has there been a moment when you thought, "I am too small to make any difference"? What was the smallest thing you could have done then?
Find one small way to help someone today — a warning, a hand, a kind word. Do not wait until you are older.
The Quran, Surah An-Naml: 18-19
The ant's words and Sulaiman's smile are the words of the two verses.
