في السنة التاسعة صارت المدينة تستقبل وفوداً من كل قبائل الجزيرة، حتى سُمّي «عام الوفود». جاء وفد بني تميم يريدون المفاخرة بالشعر والخطابة، فأمر النبي ﷺ ثابت بن قيس أن يخطب وحسّان بن ثابت أن ينشد، فأحسنا، فقال التميميون: خطيبه أخطب من خطيبنا، وشاعره أشعر من شاعرنا.
الكلمة الطيبة تكسب القلوب أكثر من المفاخرة.
لما استقرّت الدولة وأمنت الطرق، أدركت قبائل الجزيرة أن الأمر قد ثبت، فبدأت وفودها تتوافد على المدينة من كل ناحية تتعلّم الدين وتعقد العهود، حتى سُمّيت السنة التاسعة «عام الوفود». وكان من أشهرها وفد بني تميم، وكانوا قوماً يفخرون بالشعر والخطابة، فجاءوا يريدون المفاخرة. فلم يردّهم النبي ﷺ ولم يزجرهم، بل قابل الشعر بالشعر والخطبة بالخطبة: أمر ثابت بن قيس رضي الله عنه فخطب، وأمر حسّان بن ثابت رضي الله عنه فأنشد. فلما فرغا قال خطيب بني تميم كلمة صار يُتناقلها الناس: خطيبه أخطب من خطيبنا، وشاعره أشعر من شاعرنا. ثم أسلموا. رُدّت المفاخرة بالإحسان، لا بالإسكات.
قال تعالى في تلك السنين: ﴿وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا﴾.
لو حدّاك أحد في شيء تجيده، تردّ عليه إزاي من غير ما تجرحه؟

In the ninth year Madinah was receiving delegations from every tribe in Arabia — it became known as the Year of Delegations. The delegation of Banu Tamim came wanting a contest of poetry and oratory, so the Prophet ﷺ had Thabit ibn Qays speak and Hassan ibn Thabit recite. Both did well, and the Tamimis said: his orator is better than ours, and his poet is better than ours.
A good word wins hearts better than out-boasting anyone.
Once the state was settled and the roads were safe, the tribes of Arabia understood that the matter had held, and their delegations began arriving in Madinah from every direction to learn the religion and make agreements — so the ninth year was called the Year of Delegations. Among the best known was the delegation of Banu Tamim, a people proud of their poetry and oratory, who came looking for a contest. The Prophet ﷺ neither turned them away nor silenced them: he met poetry with poetry and speech with speech. He had Thabit ibn Qays give the address, and Hassan ibn Thabit recite the verse. When they finished, the spokesman of Banu Tamim said a line people repeated afterwards: his orator is better than ours, and his poet is better than ours. Then they accepted Islam. The boast was answered by doing it better, not by shutting it down.
Allah says of those years: ﴿وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا﴾ — “and you see people entering the religion of Allah in crowds.”
