جاء فقراء الصحابة يطلبون ما يركبونه ليخرجوا مع الجيش، فقال النبي ﷺ: «لا أجد ما أحملكم عليه»، فرجعوا وأعينهم تفيض من الدمع حزناً ألا يجدوا ما ينفقون، فسمّاهم القرآن. وتخلّف كعب بن مالك وصاحباه من غير عذر، فلما رجع الجيش صدق ولم يعتذر بالكذب، فتاب الله عليه.
الصدق ينجّي ولو كان الاعتراف صعباً.
لما دعا النبي ﷺ إلى الخروج، جاءه نفر من فقراء الصحابة يسألونه ما يركبونه، فقال: «لا أجد ما أحملكم عليه». فتولّوا وأعينهم تفيض من الدمع حزناً ألا يجدوا ما ينفقون، فذكرهم الله في كتابه وسمّاهم الناس «البكّائين»: أرادوا ولم يقدروا، فكُتب لهم أجر من خرج. وفي المقابل تخلّف ثلاثة من الصحابة الصادقين — منهم كعب بن مالك رضي الله عنه — من غير عذر، إنما التسويف يوماً بعد يوم. فلما رجع الجيش جاء المنافقون يعتذرون بالكذب فقُبل ظاهرهم، وجاء كعب فقال الحقّ ولم يختلق عذراً. فأمر النبي ﷺ الناس ألا يكلّموهم خمسين ليلة، حتى ضاقت عليهم الأرض بما رحبت، ثم نزل القرآن بتوبتهم. قال كعب بعدها: ما أنعم الله عليّ نعمة بعد الإسلام أعظم من صدقي.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَعَلَى الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ﴾.
ما آخر مرة قلت الحقيقة وأنت تعلم أنها ستكلّفك شيئاً؟

Poor companions came asking for mounts so they could go with the army, and the Prophet ﷺ said: “I have nothing to carry you on.” They turned away with tears pouring down, grieving that they had nothing to give — and the Quran named them. Ka'b ibn Malik and two others stayed behind with no excuse, and when the army returned he told the truth instead of inventing one, and Allah accepted his repentance.
Telling the truth saves you, even when owning up is hard.
When the Prophet ﷺ called the people out, some of the poorer companions came asking for mounts, and he said: “I have nothing to carry you on.” They turned away with their eyes overflowing, grieving that they had nothing to spend — and Allah mentioned them in His Book; people called them “the weepers”. They wanted to go and could not, and the reward of those who went was written for them. On the other side, three truthful companions stayed behind with no excuse at all — among them Ka'b ibn Malik — simply putting it off, one day after another. When the army came back, the hypocrites came with invented excuses and were taken at their word, and Ka'b came and told the truth and made nothing up. The Prophet ﷺ told the people not to speak to the three for fifty nights, until the earth closed in on them for all its wideness — and then the Quran came down accepting their repentance. Ka'b said afterwards: Allah has given me no gift after Islam greater than my telling the truth.
Allah says of them: ﴿حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ﴾ — “until the earth closed in on them for all its vastness.”
