أمر النبي ﷺ بتجهيز جيش إلى الشام، وأمّر عليه أسامة بن زيد وهو شابّ صغير، وفي الجيش كبار الصحابة. فتكلّم بعض الناس في صغر سنّه، فخطب النبي ﷺ وقال: «إن تطعنوا في إمارته فقد كنتم تطعنون في إمارة أبيه من قبل، وايم الله إن كان لخليقاً للإمارة».
الكفاءة لا تُقاس بعدد السنين.
في أواخر أيامه ﷺ، أمر بتجهيز جيش يتوجّه إلى حدود الشام، وأمّر عليه أسامة بن زيد رضي الله عنهما — وكان شابّاً في نحو الثامنة عشرة — وفي ذلك الجيش من كبار المهاجرين والأنصار. فتكلّم بعض الناس في صغر سنّه وقالوا: يؤمّر هذا على هؤلاء؟ فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ فخرج مغضباً وصعد المنبر فقال: «إن تطعنوا في إمارته فقد كنتم تطعنون في إمارة أبيه من قبل، وايم الله إن كان لخليقاً للإمارة، وإن كان لمن أحبّ الناس إليّ، وإن هذا لمن أحبّ الناس إليّ بعده». فسكت الناس ورضوا. لم يُختر أسامة لأنه ابن حِبّ النبي ﷺ فقط، بل لأنه كان أهلاً — وهذا ما دافع عنه النبي ﷺ في آخر أيامه.
قال تعالى في اختيار الأكفأ: ﴿إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ اسْتَأْجَرْتَ الْقَوِيُّ الْأَمِينُ﴾.
حدّ أكبر منك وثق فيك في حاجة؟ حسّيت بإيه ساعتها؟

The Prophet ﷺ ordered an army prepared for Syria and put Usamah ibn Zayd in command — a young man, with senior companions in his ranks. Some people talked about how young he was, so the Prophet ﷺ addressed them: “If you criticise his command, you criticised his father's command before him. By Allah, he was fit for command.”
Being capable is not measured in years.
In his last days the Prophet ﷺ ordered an army prepared to move to the Syrian frontier, and appointed Usamah ibn Zayd over it — a young man of about eighteen — with senior Muhajirun and Ansar in the ranks. Some people talked about how young he was: is this one put in command over those? Word reached the Prophet ﷺ and he came out angry, climbed the pulpit, and said: “If you criticise his command, you criticised his father's command before him. By Allah, he was fit for command, and he was among the dearest of people to me, and this one is among the dearest of people to me after him.” The people fell silent and accepted it. Usamah was not chosen because he was the son of someone the Prophet loved; he was chosen because he was up to it — and that is what the Prophet ﷺ defended in his final days.
Allah says of choosing the best person: ﴿إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ اسْتَأْجَرْتَ الْقَوِيُّ الْأَمِينُ﴾ — “the best you can hire is the strong and trustworthy.”
