كان رأسه ﷺ على صدر عائشة رضي الله عنها، فدخل أخوها ومعه سواك رطب، فنظر إليه النبي ﷺ، فعرفت أنه يريده، فليّنته له فاستنّ به. ثم رفع بصره وجعل يقول: «مع الرفيق الأعلى»، ثم قضى ﷺ.
آخر ما يبقى من الإنسان اختياره.
في يوم الاثنين، كان رأس النبي ﷺ بين سَحْر عائشة رضي الله عنها ونَحرها. فدخل أخوها عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكر ومعه سواك رطب، فنظر إليه النبي ﷺ نظرة عرفت منها عائشة أنه يشتهيه، فقالت: آخذه لك؟ فأشار برأسه أن نعم. فأخذته فقضمته وليّنته بأسنانها ثم أعطته إياه، فاستنّ به أحسن ما رأته يستنّ. ثم أراد أن يناولها إياه فسقطت يده. وكان بين يديه رَكوة فيها ماء يدخل يديه فيمسح بهما وجهه. ثم رفع بصره إلى السقف وقال: «مع الذين أنعمت عليهم من النبيّين والصدّيقين والشهداء والصالحين»، ثم قال: «اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني وألحقني بالرفيق الأعلى»، يكرّرها: «بل الرفيق الأعلى». ثم مالت يده وقُبض ﷺ.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ﴾.
فيه عادة صغيرة حلوة بتعملها كل يوم وتحبّ تفضل عليها؟

His head was on Aishah's chest when her brother came in with a fresh toothstick. The Prophet ﷺ looked at it, and she understood that he wanted it, so she softened it for him and he used it. Then he raised his eyes and began saying: “With the Highest Companion” — and he passed away.
The last thing left of a person is what they chose.
On the Monday, the Prophet's head was resting against Aishah. Her brother Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr came in holding a fresh toothstick, and the Prophet ﷺ looked at it in a way that told her he wanted it. She said: shall I take it for you? He nodded. So she took it, bit it soft and gave it to him, and he cleaned his teeth with it as well as she had ever seen him do. Then he went to hand it back, and his hand dropped. There was a vessel of water before him, and he was dipping his hands in it and wiping his face. Then he raised his eyes towards the ceiling and said: “With those Allah has favoured — the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous.” Then: “O Allah, forgive me and have mercy on me and join me with the Highest Companion,” repeating it: “Rather, the Highest Companion.” Then his hand fell, and he passed away.
Allah says: ﴿فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ﴾ — “those are with the ones Allah has favoured: the prophets and the truthful.”
