In the middle of the sermon the Prophet ﷺ turned to the women and said: “Take good care of the women,” and he repeated it. In that time there were people who inherited women as they inherited goods, and people who buried their infant daughters alive. This instruction overturned all of it.
The best of people is the best to his own household.
In the middle of that sermon, the Prophet ﷺ stopped at the group who had been genuinely the most powerless in that age: women. They were denied inheritance, they were inherited like property, and some men buried their infant daughters alive. The Prophet ﷺ told all the people: “Take good care of the women,” and he said it again and pressed it, reminding them that they were a trust taken under Allah's covenant. This was not one line on one day: elsewhere he said, “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family” — making the measure of a man how he treats the people in his house, not how he looks in public. With that, whole customs by which women had been wronged for centuries came to an end.
Allah says: ﴿وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ﴾ — “And live with them in kindness.”
