وصل الجيش إلى تبوك على حدود الشام وعسكر هناك. فلما رأى القوم هذا الجيش الذي قطع الصحراء في عزّ الصيف، لم يخرجوا لقتاله. فأقام النبي ﷺ أياماً، وصالح أهل المناطق الحدودية على الأمان، ثم رجع الجيش ولم تُرَق قطرة دم.
أنجح المواجهات ما انتهت قبل أن تبدأ.
سار الجيش شمالاً حتى بلغ تبوك على أطراف الشام، فعسكر هناك. ولم يخرج إليهم أحد يقاتلهم: رأى القوم جيشاً قطع الصحراء في عزّ القيظ ولم يتراجع، فآثروا ألا يبدأوا قتالاً. فأقام النبي ﷺ بتبوك أياماً، ولم يجعلها وقتاً ضائعاً: صالح حكّام المناطق الحدودية — أيلة وجَرباء وأَذْرُح — على الأمان والجزية، وكتب لهم كتاب أمان يحمي أرضهم وقوافلهم، فأمنت الطرق التجارية شمالاً. ثم رجع الجيش إلى المدينة وقد بلغ غايته: حدود آمنة، وعهود مكتوبة، وهيبة تكفي أن تمنع الحرب — من غير أن تُراق قطرة دم واحدة.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَكَفَى اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْقِتَالَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ قَوِيًّا عَزِيزًا﴾.

The army reached Tabuk on the Syrian frontier and made camp. When the people there saw an army that had crossed the desert in high summer, no one came out to fight it. The Prophet ﷺ stayed some days, made treaties of safety with the border towns, and the army went home without a drop of blood being spilt.
The best confrontation is the one that ends before it starts.
The army marched north until it reached Tabuk on the edge of Syria, and made camp. No one came out against them: they saw an army that had crossed the desert in the worst of the heat and had not turned back, and chose not to begin a fight. The Prophet ﷺ stayed at Tabuk some days, and did not waste them: he made terms of safety with the rulers of the frontier towns — Ayla, Jarba and Adhruh — and wrote them a covenant protecting their land and their caravans, so the trade roads to the north were safe. Then the army returned to Madinah having got everything it went for: secure borders, written agreements, and enough standing to prevent a war — without a drop of blood being spilt.
Allah says: ﴿وَكَفَى اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْقِتَالَ﴾ — “And Allah sufficed the believers in fighting.”
