بينما تراجع الناس، ثبت النبي ﷺ على بغلته في المقدّمة ولم يرجع خطوة، وهو يقول: «أنا النبي لا كذب، أنا ابن عبد المطلب». وأمر عمّه العباس — وكان جهير الصوت — أن ينادي: يا أصحاب الشجرة! فرجعوا يقولون: لبيك لبيك، حتى استقام الأمر.
القائد يُعرف حين يتراجع الجميع.
في اللحظة التي انكشفت فيها المقدّمة وارتدّ الناس، لم يتحرّك النبي ﷺ من مكانه. ثبت على بغلته البيضاء في مقدّمة الميدان يتقدّم نحو القوم، وهو يرفع صوته: «أنا النبي لا كذب، أنا ابن عبد المطلب». ثم أمر عمّه العباس بن عبد المطلب — وكان رجلاً جهير الصوت — أن ينادي في الناس: «يا أصحاب الشجرة! يا أصحاب سورة البقرة!»، يذكّرهم بالبيعة التي بايعوها تحت الشجرة. فما إن سمعوا النداء حتى انعطفوا راجعين يقولون: «لبيك لبيك»، حتى اجتمعوا حول نبيّهم. ثم تقدّموا فأنزل الله سكينته عليهم، وانتهى اليوم بالنصر بعدما بدأ بالاضطراب.
قال تعالى: ﴿ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا﴾.
إذا ارتبك فريقك كله، ما أول شيء تفعله أنت؟

While the men fell back, the Prophet ﷺ held his place at the front on his mule and did not take a step backwards, saying: “I am the Prophet, this is no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.” He told his uncle al-Abbas — who had a carrying voice — to call out: People of the Tree! And back they came, answering: here we are, here we are — until the day was steady again.
You find out who the leader is when everyone else turns back.
At the moment the front broke and the men turned back, the Prophet ﷺ did not move. He held his place on his white mule at the head of the field, going forward towards the enemy, and raised his voice: “I am the Prophet, this is no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.” Then he told his uncle al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib — a man with a carrying voice — to call to the people: “People of the Tree! People of Surah al-Baqarah!”, reminding them of the pledge they had given beneath the tree. The moment they heard it they turned back, answering “here we are, here we are”, until they had gathered around their Prophet. Then they advanced, and Allah sent down His tranquillity upon them, and a day that had begun in confusion ended in victory.
Allah says: ﴿ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ — “Then Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers.”
