The people of Mecca were skilled at reading tracks in the sand. So Abu Bakr arranged for his shepherd, Amir ibn Fuhayra, to drive the flock behind them, so the sheep walked over their footprints and wiped them away. The trail vanished, and no one could find their road.
Trusting Allah does not mean neglecting the means.
Among Quraysh were men who could read footprints in the sand with real precision, so the trail was a genuine danger. Abu Bakr arranged something careful: he told his shepherd Amir ibn Fuhayra to drive the flock along behind them, so that the sheep walked over their footprints as they grazed and blotted them out. Amir also brought them the sheep's milk at the cave. By this arrangement the trail was lost in the desert, and no one found them.
Allah says of preparing means: ﴿وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُم مَّا اسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٍ﴾ — “prepare for them whatever you are able.”
