After Badr the captives came to Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ told his companions to treat them well — so the companions gave them the bread and ate dates themselves. When the time came to free them, the Prophet ﷺ set the ransom of a captive who could read and write, but had no money, at teaching ten Muslim children to read and write.
Knowledge can free a captive, and mercy comes before revenge.
When the battle ended, the captives were brought into Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ instructed his companions: “Treat the captives well.” So the companions would give them the bread and eat dates themselves, out of honour for them. When the time came to release them, those with money paid a ransom; and a captive who could read and write but had no money was ransomed by teaching ten Muslim children to read and write — and then he went free. The point was never revenge: captivity itself became a door to spreading learning.
Allah praises kindness to a captive: ﴿
