بعد فتح مكة خرج المسلمون في اثني عشر ألفاً، وهو أكبر جيش خرجوا فيه. فنظر بعضهم إلى كثرتهم وقال: لن نُغلب اليوم من قلة! فلما دخلوا وادي حُنين الضيق، باغتهم الرماة من مضايق الجبل عند الفجر، فاضطربت الصفوف. الكثرة وحدها لا تصنع نصراً.
العدد لا ينفع إذا غاب التواضع والتوكل.
بعد فتح مكة بأيام، جمعت هوازن وثقيف قواتها لقتال المسلمين، فخرج إليهم النبي ﷺ في اثني عشر ألف مقاتل: عشرة آلاف كانوا معه في الفتح، وألفان من أهل مكة. وكان هذا أكبر جيش خرج فيه المسلمون حتى ذلك اليوم. فنظر بعضهم إلى هذه الكثرة فأعجبته وقال: «لن نُغلب اليوم من قلة». وكان في هذه الكلمة ما فيها. فلما انحدروا في وادي حُنين — وهو وادٍ ضيّق بين جبال — كان رماة هوازن قد كمنوا في مضايقه، فرشقوا مقدّمة الجيش بالسهام في عتمة الفجر رشقاً واحداً، فانكشفت المقدّمة وارتدّ كثير من الناس. فكان الدرس أبلغ من أن يُنسى: النصر من عند الله وحده، لا من كثرة العدد.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْئًا﴾.
متى شعرت بأن النجاح مضمون فتكاسلت في الاستعداد له؟

After the conquest of Mecca the Muslims went out twelve thousand strong — the largest army they had ever gathered. Some looked at their own numbers and said: we will not be beaten today for being few! Then they came down into the narrow valley of Hunayn, where archers ambushed them at dawn, and the ranks broke. Numbers alone do not win anything.
Numbers are no help when humility and trust are missing.
Days after the conquest of Mecca, Hawazin and Thaqif gathered their forces against the Muslims, and the Prophet ﷺ went out to meet them with twelve thousand men: the ten thousand who had been with him at the conquest, and two thousand of the people of Mecca. It was the largest army the Muslims had ever put in the field. Some of them looked at that number, and it pleased them, and they said: “We will not be beaten today for being few.” There was more in that sentence than they knew. When they came down into the valley of Hunayn — a narrow pass between hills — the archers of Hawazin were waiting in its bends, and they loosed on the front of the army all at once in the half-light of dawn. The front broke, and many turned back. The lesson was too sharp to forget: victory comes from Allah alone, not from the size of a crowd.
Allah says: ﴿وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْئًا﴾ — “and on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers pleased you but availed you nothing.”
