في السنة العاشرة أعلن النبي ﷺ أنه حاجّ، فخرج الناس معه من كل ناحية حتى صاروا جموعاً لا تُحصى. أحرم من ذي الحُليفة في ثوبين أبيضين، ولبس الناس مثله، فما عاد يُعرف الغنيّ من الفقير. وارتفعت أصواتهم: لبّيك اللهم لبّيك.
أمام الله يقف الناس سواء.
في ذي القعدة من السنة العاشرة للهجرة، أعلن النبي ﷺ أنه خارج إلى الحجّ. فما إن بلغ الخبر القبائل حتى خرجوا من كل وادٍ يريدون أن يحجّوا معه ويروا كيف يحجّ، فاجتمع معه في المدينة وفي الطريق جموع عظيمة يقدّرها المؤرّخون بأكثر من مئة ألف. ولمّا بلغوا ذي الحُليفة أحرم النبي ﷺ: خلع ثيابه المخيطة ولبس إزاراً ورداءً أبيضين لا زينة فيهما، ولبس الناس كلّهم مثل لبسه. فلم يعد يُعرف الأمير من الراعي ولا الغنيّ من الفقير: ثوبان أبيضان وكلمة واحدة يردّدها مئة ألف حَلْق: «لبّيك اللهم لبّيك، لبّيك لا شريك لك لبّيك». هكذا يبدأ الحجّ: بأن يترك الناس كل ما يفرّقهم عند أول محطة.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَأَذِّن فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ﴾.
لو الناس كلها لابسة زيّ واحد، إيه اللي هيفرّق بينهم ساعتها؟

In the tenth year the Prophet ﷺ announced that he would make the pilgrimage, and people came out with him from every direction until they were beyond counting. He entered the state of pilgrimage at Dhu al-Hulayfah in two white cloths, and everyone dressed as he did, so you could no longer tell the rich from the poor. And their voices rose: here I am, O Allah, here I am.
Before Allah, people stand as equals.
In Dhu al-Qi'dah of the tenth year after the migration, the Prophet ﷺ announced that he was going for the pilgrimage. As soon as word reached the tribes they came out of every valley wanting to make the pilgrimage with him and to see how he did it, until an enormous crowd had gathered — historians estimate more than a hundred thousand. At Dhu al-Hulayfah the Prophet ﷺ entered ihram: he took off his sewn clothes and put on a plain white lower garment and cloak with no ornament on them, and every person there dressed as he had. You could no longer tell a commander from a shepherd or a rich man from a poor one: two white cloths, and one sentence repeated by a hundred thousand throats — “Here I am, O Allah, here I am; here I am, You have no partner, here I am.” That is how the pilgrimage begins: everyone leaves what divides them at the first stop.
Allah says: ﴿وَأَذِّن فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا﴾ — “And proclaim the pilgrimage to the people; they will come to you on foot.”
