اجتمع أهل مكة عند الكعبة ينتظرون ما يُفعل بهم، وهم الذين أخرجوه وعذّبوا أصحابه عشرين سنة. فقال لهم: «ما تظنون أني فاعل بكم؟» قالوا: خيراً، أخٌ كريم وابن أخٍ كريم. فقال: «اذهبوا فأنتم الطلقاء».
أعظم القوة أن تعفو وأنت قادر.
اجتمع أهل مكة عند باب الكعبة ينتظرون حكمه فيهم، وهم يعلمون أنه قادر عليهم اليوم، وأنهم هم الذين أخرجوه من بلده، وعذّبوا أصحابه، وحاربوه عشرين سنة، وقتلوا عمّه. فنظر إليهم نظرة العفو وقال: «يا معشر قريش، ما تظنون أني فاعل بكم؟» قالوا: خيراً، أخٌ كريم وابن أخٍ كريم. فقال ﷺ: «اذهبوا فأنتم الطلقاء». لم يحبس أحداً، ولم يأخذ مالاً، ولم يقتصّ من أحد. فدخل كثير منهم في الإسلام يومئذ لا خوفاً بل حبّاً، وانتهت العداوة كلها في كلمة واحدة. وبهذا بلغت مرحلة الدفاع عن الوطن غايتها: أمنٌ وعدل بلا انتقام.
قال تعالى في خُلُقه ﷺ: ﴿خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجَاهِلِينَ﴾.
مَن الشخص الذي تستطيع أن تسامحه اليوم؟

The people of Mecca gathered at the Kaaba waiting to hear what would be done to them — the same people who had driven him out and tortured his companions for twenty years. He asked them: “What do you think I will do with you?” They said: good; a noble brother and the son of a noble brother. He said: “Go — you are free.”
The greatest strength is to forgive when you are able to punish.
The people of Mecca gathered at the door of the Kaaba, waiting for his judgement. They knew he had power over them that day, and they knew what they had done: they had driven him from his city, tortured his companions, fought him for twenty years and killed his uncle. He looked at them with pardon and said: “People of Quraysh, what do you think I will do with you?” They answered: “Good — a noble brother, and the son of a noble brother.” He said: “Go — you are free.” He held no one, took no property, and took revenge on no one. Many of them entered Islam that day, not out of fear but out of love, and the whole enmity ended in a single sentence. With that, the years of defending the homeland reached their purpose: safety and justice, without revenge.
Allah says of his character: ﴿خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ﴾ — “Take to forgiveness, and enjoin what is good.”
