جاء وفد من نصارى نجران باليمن إلى المدينة، فأنزلهم النبي ﷺ في مسجده وأكرمهم. ولما حانت صلاتهم قاموا يصلّون في ناحية المسجد، فأراد بعض الناس منعهم، فقال النبي ﷺ: دعوهم. وتحاوروا أياماً بالحجّة، ثم رجعوا على دينهم وبينهم وبين المسلمين عهد أمان.
الحوار يكون بالحجّة، والضيف يُكرَم وإن خالفك.
قدم على النبي ﷺ وفد من نصارى نجران — وهي بلد في اليمن — وفيهم أساقفتهم ووجوههم، وقد لبسوا أحسن ثيابهم. فأكرمهم النبي ﷺ وأنزلهم في مسجده. فلما حضر وقت صلاتهم قاموا يصلّون في ناحية من المسجد، فهمّ بعض الناس بمنعهم، فقال النبي ﷺ: «دعوهم». ثم جرى بينه وبينهم حوار طويل أياماً في التوحيد وفي عيسى عليه السلام، كلّه بالحجّة والبيان، لا إكراه فيه ولا تهديد. فلما لم يتفقوا، لم يُجبَروا: رجعوا على دينهم، وكتب لهم النبي ﷺ عهد أمان على أنفسهم وأموالهم وكنائسهم، وطلبوا منه رجلاً أميناً يقضي بينهم في أمورهم، فبعث معهم أبا عبيدة بن الجرّاح رضي الله عنه.
قال تعالى: ﴿وَلَا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ﴾.

A delegation of the Christians of Najran in Yemen came to Madinah, and the Prophet ﷺ lodged them in his mosque and treated them generously. When the time for their prayer came they stood to pray in a corner of the mosque; some people moved to stop them, and the Prophet ﷺ said: let them be. They talked for days, and then went home on their own religion, with a covenant of safety between them.
Argue with reasons, and honour a guest even when he disagrees with you.
A delegation of the Christians of Najran — a district of Yemen — came to the Prophet ﷺ, their bishops and notables among them, dressed in their finest. He treated them generously and lodged them in his mosque. When the time for their prayer came, they stood to pray in a corner of the mosque, and some of the people moved to stop them; the Prophet ﷺ said: “Let them be.” Then a long discussion ran between them for days, about the oneness of Allah and about Jesus, peace be upon him — all of it argument and explanation, with no compulsion and no threat in it. When they did not agree, they were not forced: they went home on their own religion, and the Prophet ﷺ wrote them a covenant of safety for themselves, their property and their churches. They asked him for a trustworthy man to judge between them in their affairs, and he sent Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah with them.
Allah says: ﴿وَلَا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ﴾ — “Do not argue with the People of the Book except in the best way.”
