جاء إلى مكة شاعر حكيم اسمه الطُّفيل بن عمرو الدَّوسي، فحذّرته قريش من سماع كلام النبي ﷺ، فوضع القطن في أذنيه. ثم فكّر وقال: أنا رجل أفهم الكلام، فلماذا لا أسمع؟ فنزع القطن وسمع القرآن، فأسلم وقال: والله ما سمعت كلاماً أحسن من هذا قط.
لا تحكم على شيء قبل أن تسمعه بنفسك.
قدِم إلى مكة شاعر حكيم يُدعى الطُّفيل بن عمرو الدَّوسي، فحذّره زعماء قريش وقالوا له: «لا تسمع من محمد كلمة واحدة، فإن كلامه كالسحر يفرّق بين الرجل وأهله». فخاف الطفيل ووضع القطن في أذنيه وهو يطوف بالكعبة. ثم راجع نفسه وقال: «أنا رجل شاعر لبيب أعرف الحسن من القبيح، فما يمنعني أن أسمع؟ فإن كان حسناً قبلته». فنزع القطن وسمع القرآن من النبي ﷺ، فأسلم من ساعته وقال: «والله ما سمعت كلاماً أحسن من هذا قط».
قال تعالى في أثر القرآن على القلوب: ﴿وَإِذَا سُمِعُوا مَا أُنزِلَ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ تَرَىٰ أَعْيُنَهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوا مِنَ الْحَقِّ﴾.

A wise poet named at-Tufayl ibn Amr ad-Dawsi came to Mecca. Quraysh warned him not to hear a word from the Prophet (pbuh), so he put cotton in his ears. Then he thought again: I am a man who understands words — why should I not listen? He took the cotton out, heard the Quran, and became Muslim, saying: by Allah, I have never heard anything better.
Do not judge a thing before you have heard it yourself.
A wise poet named at-Tufayl ibn Amr ad-Dawsi came to Mecca. The leaders of Quraysh warned him: “Do not hear a single word from Muhammad — his speech is like magic that splits a man from his own family.” At-Tufayl was afraid and put cotton in his ears while he circled the Kaaba. Then he thought it over: “I am a poet who knows fine speech from foul. What stops me from listening? If it is good, I will accept it.” He took the cotton out, heard the Quran from the Prophet (pbuh), and became Muslim on the spot, saying: “By Allah, I have never heard anything better than this.”
Allah says of the Quran's effect: ﴿تَرَىٰ أَعْيُنَهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوا مِنَ الْحَقِّ﴾ — their eyes overflow at the truth they recognise.
