The tribes worshipped stone idols, asking them for provision and healing. When they entered Islam, men were sent to those idols to take them down — often men from the same tribe. People stood and saw with their own eyes that a stone cannot ward off a single blow, and the illusion fell before the idol did.
A false idea falls the moment you see it as it really is.
Every Arab tribe had an idol it honoured: al-Lat for Thaqif, al-Uzza for Quraysh, Manat, Suwa' and others. They sacrificed to them and asked them for rain, healing and children. When the tribes entered Islam after the Year of Delegations, men were sent to take those idols down — and the Prophet ﷺ usually sent a man from the tribe itself, like Khalid ibn al-Walid or al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, because people accept more readily from one of their own. Breaking the stone was never the point in itself: people stood watching, and saw that this thing they had feared and petitioned could not stop a single blow falling on it. The fear left their hearts before the idol left its base, and what they held onto moved from stones to Allah alone, and from rituals to character.
Allah says: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ عِبَادٌ أَمْثَالُكُمْ﴾ — “Those you call upon besides Allah are servants like you.”
