The forts of Khaybar in the north were a base funding those who fought Madinah, so the Prophet ﷺ went out to secure the frontier. When they reached the strongest fort he said: “Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.” He called Ali ibn Abi Talib, whose eyes were sore, healed them, and handed him the banner.

The forts of Khaybar, north of Madinah, were a base gathering money and weapons and stirring the tribes against the Muslims, so the Prophet ﷺ went out to secure the frontier and end the danger. The Muslims took the forts one after another until they reached the strongest of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love; Allah will grant victory through him.” The people spent the night wondering which of them it would be. In the morning he asked: “Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?” They said his eyes were sore. He called for him, treated his eyes, and they were healed as though he had never had any pain — and he handed him the banner, and the fort was opened through him. Afterwards the Prophet ﷺ settled with the people of Khaybar that they stay and farm their land, with a share of its produce.
Allah says: ﴿فَأَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَثَابَهُمْ فَتْحًا قَرِيبًا﴾ — “He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with a near victory.”
