جاء الخبر أن الروم يحشدون على حدود الشام، والوقت صيف شديد الحر والثمار قد نضجت. فدعا النبي ﷺ الناس إلى الخروج، وكان الزاد قليلاً حتى سُمّي «جيش العُسرة». فتسابق الصحابة في البذل: جاء أبو بكر بكل ماله، وعمر بنصف ماله، وجهّز عثمان جزءاً كبيراً من الجيش.
العطاء الحقيقي يظهر وقت الضيق لا وقت السَّعة.
بلغ النبي ﷺ أن الروم يجمعون جيشاً على حدود الشام، فدعا المسلمين إلى الخروج. وكان الوقت أصعب ما يكون: قيظ الصيف، والثمار قد أينعت والناس يحبّون أن يقيموا عندها، والمسافة بعيدة، والزاد قليل حتى كان الرجلان يتعاقبان على بعير واحد. ولذلك سُمّي «جيش العُسرة». فلما دعا النبي ﷺ إلى النفقة، تسابق الصحابة تسابقاً لم يُر مثله: جاء أبو بكر رضي الله عنه بماله كلّه، فسأله النبي ﷺ: «ما أبقيتَ لأهلك؟» قال: أبقيتُ لهم الله ورسوله. وجاء عمر رضي الله عنه بنصف ماله. وجهّز عثمان رضي الله عنه جزءاً كبيراً من الجيش بالإبل والمال، حتى قال فيه النبي ﷺ كلمة عظيمة. لم يكن السباق على الغنيمة، بل على العطاء.
قال تعالى: ﴿لَقَد تَّابَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ فِي سَاعَةِ الْعُسْرَةِ﴾.
ما الشيء الذي تحبّه وتستطيع أن تعطيه لمن يحتاجه أكثر منك؟

Word came that the Byzantines were gathering on the Syrian frontier — in the height of summer, with the fruit ripe on the trees. The Prophet ﷺ called the people out, and supplies were so short that it was called the Army of Hardship. The companions raced to give: Abu Bakr brought everything he owned, Umar half of his, and Uthman equipped a large part of the army.
Real giving shows in a hard season, not an easy one.
Word reached the Prophet ﷺ that the Byzantines were massing an army on the Syrian frontier, and he called the Muslims out. The timing could not have been harder: the peak of summer heat, the fruit ripe and everyone wanting to stay with it, a long road ahead, and supplies so short that two men took turns on one camel. That is why it was called the Army of Hardship. When the Prophet ﷺ called for contributions, the companions raced one another as they never had: Abu Bakr brought everything he owned, and when the Prophet ﷺ asked him, “What did you leave for your family?”, he answered: I left them Allah and His Messenger. Umar brought half of his wealth. Uthman equipped a large part of the army with camels and money, and the Prophet ﷺ said something remarkable about him for it. The race was not for spoils. It was for who could give the most.
Allah says: ﴿الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ فِي سَاعَةِ الْعُسْرَةِ﴾ — “those who followed him in the hour of hardship.”
