The earliest copies had no dots on the letters and no vowel marks. Abu al-Aswad ad-Du'ali added the first marks for vowelling; then Nasr ibn Asim and Yahya ibn Ya'mar dotted the letters so a ba could be told from a ta; then Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi developed the fatha, damma and kasra shapes we use today — so that everyone could read it correctly.
Histories of the mushaf — vowelling and the dotting of letters
This account is established in the field: Abu al-Aswad's marks were coloured dots, not today's shapes; Nasr ibn Asim and Yahya ibn Ya'mar added the letter-dots; and Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad came after them with the vowel shapes we use today.
